Area Gates

The glowing red barriers that seal off the areas you haven't earned yet. Walk up to one and it tells you exactly what you need. Meet the requirement and it disappears for you on the spot.

What They Are #

Timelords is one seamless world. There are no loading screens or separate maps. Every mine, peak and chamber is a region you physically walk to. Area gates are how the game keeps you on the intended path: a translucent red wall stretched across a doorway or tunnel that you simply cannot walk through until you've unlocked what's on the other side.

Every gate shows a message written right on the barrier telling you its requirement. As soon as you meet that requirement, the gate vanishes for you and you stride straight through, with no button to press and no NPC to talk to. The wall is only ever there for players who haven't earned the area yet, so a gate you passed long ago is invisible to you now.

🛈
Gates are one-directional in feel but not in fact: they simply block anyone who can't pass, from either side. New to the game? Open /guide to browse this very wiki in your browser, or hit /warp in-game to see the next area and what it takes to unlock.

How Passing a Gate Works #

Try to walk into a gate you haven't unlocked and three things happen at once:

You're pushed back
The barrier gently shoves you away from it, so you can't clip or sprint through, even at full speed.
A denial sound plays
The classic villager “no” grunt, so you know instantly you've hit a wall.
The requirement is shown
The barrier's text spells out precisely what you're missing (a Time Leap tier, a resource total, an alignment, and so on), and a matching message flashes on your action bar.

The moment you satisfy the requirement (buy that Time Leap, hit that resource total, pick that alignment), the gate disappears for you within a second and stays gone. You never have to backtrack to a menu; just walk forward.

💡
Gates never take anything from you. They only check whether you currently qualify. Because your pickaxes, swords, armor and every other item are kept through every reset, unlocking an area once means it stays reachable, and the gates never reappear on you.

Every Gate & Its Requirement #

Here's every gate in the world, roughly in the order you'll meet them as you progress:

GateLeads toRequirement
VIP Cave A perks-only side area The VIP rank (from /store)
Seconds Cave The Seconds button 10,000 Moments and 100,000 Ticks
The Mines The Coal Mine and beyond Time Leap tier 2 (Explorer)
Bronze Mine The Bronze Mine Time Leap tier 4 (Miner)
Strength Area The Peak: Strength Strength unlocked (at the NPC)
Scientist Island The Scientist & Time Leap automation The Stone Age era
The Volcano The Volcano: extra Flesh Strength unlocked & the Carnage alignment

The Bronze Mine is fenced off by a pair of barriers (a way in from each side of the shaft), but both check the same thing, so clearing one clears them all for you.

Reading the Requirements #

Gate requirements come in a few flavors, and knowing which is which tells you where to go next:

Time Leap tiers

The Mines and Bronze Mine want a Time Leap tier (Explorer, Miner, and so on). Build Temporal Power and leap with /timeleap. Your best-ever tier never drops, so these open for good.

Resource totals

The Seconds Cave just wants a stash of currency: 10,000 Moments and 100,000 Ticks. Click to earn them; the gate opens the instant you cross both.

🌟 Era & alignment

Scientist Island needs the Stone Age (via /era), and the Volcano needs the Carnage alignment picked in the Alignment Chamber.

🔒 Unlocks & ranks

The Strength Area opens once you've unlocked Strength at its NPC, and the VIP Cave is reserved for the VIP rank.

🛈
Some areas beyond a gate have their own additional entry rules once you step through. The Diamond Mine, for instance, needs a later Time Leap tier and the Stone Age. See Areas for the full map of where each region sits and how to warp to it.
